Q: On this date in 1978, Patti Smith, the “Godmother of Punk”, released “Because the Night”, a song she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen and recorded with her band, the Patti Smith Group. It would go on to be her only Top 40 hit, reaching #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has since been covered by a number of different artists worldwide. The most well-known and successful cover of the song, released in 1993, surpassed the chart performance of the original, reaching #11 on the Hot 100. As it was for Smith, “Because the Night” was this group’s first mainstream chart hit, though it would not be the last. Name the group.
